A police team that had gone to arrest three proclaimed offenders (POs) was attacked at Moga’s Kot Isse Khan village on Sunday evening. A day later, 21 persons were booked, of which 11 hail from Daulewala village, notorious for drug trade.

A nine-member Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team, led by in-charge Kikkar Singh, following a tip-off, had raided a marriage palace to arrest three POs when a group hurled stones and attacked them with bats.

Two cops — head constable Gulab Singh and assistant sub-inspector Balwinder Singh — sustained injuries in the attack. The police later reportedly fired gunshots in the air to defuse the situation. While the team managed to arrest two POs — Rishi Sood, a murder accused and his brother Rajan Sood, both residents of Kot Isse Khan — Samundar Singh of Daulewala managed to give the

slip. Those who attacked the police team have been identified as Daulewala former sarpanch Harbhajan Singh, alias Pahada, Sukhdev Singh, Gurdev Singh, Balwant Singh, Jand Singh, Kala Singh, Sonu, Gurwinder Singh, Satnam Singh, Rimmi. Police claim the attack was carried at Pahada’s behest.

Police conducted another raid

on Monday to arrest Samundar Singh and others. The raid, led by deputy superintendent of police (investigation) Sarabjit Singh and deputy superintendent of police Dharamkot Jasvir Singh along with 70 cops was conducted at Daulewala village, 5 km from Kot Isse Khan, on Monday. It, however, returned emptyhanded after hours of search operation at the village. “We raided the village to nab the accused persons but they managed to escape,” said CIA in-charge Kikkar Singh. Sources allege someone in the department informed the villagers about the raid.

A case has been registered under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Kot Isse Khan police station.

This is the second unsuccessful raid within a month at Daulewala village. In a crackdown on drug peddlers on April 16, police had raided the village. The threehour search operation, however, failed to yield desired results.
