Baby Chahat returns home, parents seek financial aid

Owning to financial crunch, the family of ninemonth old overweight baby Chahat returned to the city from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, (PGIMER) Chandigarh without any treatment.

The baby has been hitting headlines for her morbid obesity.

Chahat weighs 20kg, while an ideal body weight of a ninemonth-old baby girl, should be between 6.6 - 10.4kg.

From last few months, Chahat’s parents have been running from pillar to post for their daughter’s treatment.

The child was earlier referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDU) from the district civil hospital for treatment.

From GNDU she was sent to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research-where doctors have asked for ₹ 2 lakh for her tests to find the exact problem.

The PGI doctors had claimed that Chahat could be treated once the problem is identified. Her father Suraj Kumar,23, who works in a cable operator shop said, “I do not have enough money to get her tests done. People come here to get pictures clicked with her but no one really helps.”

“Few years back, I had lost a son, now I do not want to lose her,” said Renu Kumar, 22, mother of Chahat, who claims that lifting her is becoming a difficult task.

“There seems to be no solution for our problems, I feel like we are back from where we had started, “she added.

Suraj who is already burdened with the responsibi­lity of seven family members has lost all hopes and is eagerly waiting for some sought of financial help. He has asked help from the state government as well local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife Dr Navjot Kaur.

“It is my appeal to the government, especially local bodies minister. Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife to help us,” said Suraj.
