JAIPUR: Surender Sai and Keval Jakhar who run a dairy farm in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh, have started a new gift scheme for newborn girl child and their mothers my giving them a litre of cow milk free of cost every day for a month.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Sai (26) said “Jakhar and I have a dairy farm of 120 indigenous breed of rathi cows and wanted to do something for the country and state, we decided to offer a litre of cow’s milk free of cost to mother of a newborn girl child to promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Beti Bacho, Beti Padhao’.”

“We started the scheme in April and so far 32 families are being benefited.”

The only condition to avail the scheme is that the newborn should be a girl, he said, adding that beneficiaries include government employees, impoverished families as well as rich people. A litre of cow milk costs ₹ 40.

“We check the ‘mamta card’ issued by government hospitals to new mothers that has the details about the baby before giving them the free milk,” the dairy farmer said.

The duo now plans to contribute in educating girls, either by opening a library or school for girls, and offering free books and coaching for those who want to appear for the banking and state civil services exams.

Three months back, Sai, Jakhar and Sai’s brother, Sanjay set up a catering service dishing out Rajasthani delicacies and milk products.

The 2011 Census states that the child sex ratio in district was 878 girls for every 1,000 boys, while ration in the state was 888 for every 1,000 boys.
