Wrong merit list leaves Haryana board red-faced

ROHTAK: In a major goof-up, the Haryana Education Board released an incorrect merit list for Class 10 on Monday evening, inadvertently playing a cruel joke on many students.

The BSEH declared the results at around 4pm and uploaded it on its official website. But, within an hour the board removed the result from its website and held it back for more than two hours after realising the goof up that the board authorities attributed to a major technical glitch in their software.

According to initial results, Monika Rani from Bhirdana village had topped the state by scoring 493 out of 500 marks. Three hours later, her world came crashing down.

The education board issued a new list, which had a boy — Yudhveer Singh from Sirsa district’s Lehranwali village — occupying the top position with 499 marks.

“As per the norms, the board declares results counting the best five subjects of a student out of total six. But here, the computer did not include the subject in which a student scored full 100 marks, counting the results of the bottom five subjects,” Jagbir Singh, board chairperson, explaining the glitch, said.

This technical fault led to a revision of the results of as many as 1,023 students, who had scored full 100 marks in at least one subject, he said.

Even as the board chairperson held “technical glitch” responsible that forced the board to withdraw and revise the result, two board employees, a superintendent concerned and an operator, were suspended for the alleged negligence.
