Nearly half of Class10 students flunk exam
Addl chief secy, school education, says poor result due to govt’s check on unfair means; goofup in merit list leaves many fuming
CHANDIGARH: Almost half of the total 3.15 lakh students failed in the Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE) Class-10 examination, the results of which were declared on Monday.
The overall pass percentage this year is 50.49%, which is 2% more than the previous year’s results.
Also, the very exercise of declaring the result also flummoxed many in the wake of release of a wrong merit list of the toppers.
The confusion compounded when the board officials embarrassed with the mistake withdrew the entire result around 5pm and came up with a new list of toppers only around 8 pm, thus causing a huge embarrassment for the students who were declared toppers earlier by Board’s mistake.
According to the new toppers’ list, Yudhvir of village Rania, district Sirsa topped the state with 499 marks out of 500 marks, while the second position was bagged by Sumit of village Dandakalan, district Jind with 496 marks.
The third position was jointly bagged by Sonam of Jind and Rakesh of Palwal with 495 marks.
In the overall result the girls, as usual, outshone the boys and the government schools in rural areas fared better than their urban counterparts.
More than 3.15 lakh students appeared in the said examination, of which 1.59 lakh students passed, while over 16,000 had compartments.
Of the total successful students, 80,572 students were boys and 78,918 were girls.
The pass percentage for rural areas was 52.58% while that of urban schools was 48.38%. In all, 1.58 lakh students from rural schools and 1.57 lakh students from urban schools appeared in the examination. The overall government school result was 43.5%, which was poorer than that of private schools which had a pass percentage of 58.13% and government-aided schools which had 51.18%. As many as 67,000 private candidates also took the test and their overall pass percentage was 35.4%.
The overall pass percentage in 2016 was 48.88%.
The pass percentage of girls’ last year was 52.6% and for boys it was 45.71%. Likewise, the rural schools’ result last year was about 50.3% and urban schools 45.3%.
Also the government schools’ result was 42.2%, the private schools’ was 50.92 % and government aided schools’ also about 55.9%.
RESULT NOT SATISFACTORY: ACS
Meanwhile, while terming the Class-10 result unsatisfactory, the additional chief secretary, school education, P K Das told HT that the results would be analysed to take corrective measures. “The result was an impact of government’s strict check on the unfair means in the examination and decision not to give grace marks, I would say it is not a satisfactory result. We would analyse which subjects students fare poorly in and why,” he said.
MINISTER ADMITS GLITCH IN TOPPERS’ LIST
When asked about the error in the result of the Class-10 exam, Haryana education minister Ram Bilas Sharma said there was a glitch in the computer which caused mistake in the merit list and not the overall result. “I spoke to the Board officials and they have admitted that there was some computer mistake in the result of toppers. ,” he said.
