KARNAL: The students of northern districts of the state, including chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar's constituency of Karnal, could not perform well in the Haryana Board Class-10 examination, the results of which were declared by the board on Monday.

As per the results, more than 50% students in Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Kaithal and Kurukshetra could not clear the exam in regular category. Moreover, not even a single student from these districts could make it to the list of top three scorers.

Performance of students from Yamunanagar remained poor as out of 14,533 students in Class-10, only 5,643, pushing Yamunanagar at the second last position after Faridabad, where the pass percentage was 38.80 per cent.

In Karnal, the pass percent was only 41.35 per cent as out of the total of 17,263 students in the district only 7,139 students could clear the exams.

Students of Mewat have performed better than Yamunanagar and Karnal and pass percentage in Mewat remains 43.63 per cent.

Similarly, students of other neighbouring districts also failed to impress as the pass percentage in Kaithal was around 45.91 per cent, in Kurukshetra 46.24 per cent and in Panipat 49.63 per cent.

The pass percentage in these districts was far below the highest pass percentage of 65.47 per cent reported in Jhajjar followed by 64.71 per cent of Mahenderagarh, the home constituency of education minister Ram Bilas Sharma.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Jagbir Singh, chairman of BSEH said, “Though the overall result has improved this year, we have put a complete check on copying, which can be the biggest reason behind fall in pass percentage in some districts.”

"More than 5,300 cases of copying were reported in the state and we did not allow students to use unfair means,” he added.

Karnal district education officer Harminder Singh Saini said, “Yes there is a need to find out the reasons behind the poor performance of both government and private schools, soon we will call a meeting of all the officials and school heads in this regard.”

Also, in private category, the pass percentage of the students from these districts remains low as Yamunanagar, with only 23.53 percent, remained at the second last position after Gurgram's 22.81 per cent.

Similarly in private category, the pass percentage in Karnal district was reported at 31.12 percent, in Kaithal 38.30 per cent, in Kurukshetra 38.67 per cent and in Panipat 45.31 per cent.
