BATHINDA: A 25-year-old man suspected of drug peddling died after being attacked with sharpedged weapons by a mob at Bhagi Wander village near here on Thursday.

Vinod Kumar, alias Monu Arora, who faces cases under the drugs Act, hailed from the same village. His father, Vijay, an undertrial, is also in jail in a drugs case. At present, Vinod lived in Talwandi Sabo after being forced out of the village for drug peddling.

“Vinod had gone to the village, where he was attacked,” said Talwandi Sabo deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Barinder Singh. No drugs were recovered from him, he said.

Vinod was rushed to the Talwandi Sabo civil hospital with injuries on his legs and one arm, from where he was referred to the Bathinda civil hospital.

Meanwhile, as police registered a case of attempt to murder, villagers gathered outside the hospital to protest it. Cops had to pacify them in order to take Vinod to Bathinda.

After Vinod’s condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, where he died of his injuries. “The case of attempt to murder registered against unknown persons will be converted to that of murder,” said the DSP.
