State will pay compensation to gangrape victim: NCW
GURGAON: The Haryana government has agreed to provide a monetary compensation to the Manesar gangrape victim.
The decision was formally conveyed on Thursday by Rekha Sharma, member, National Commission for Women (NCW), after a meeting with senior Gurgaon police officers with regard to the case.
Sharma also met the victim and said that she was satisfied with the progress of investigation into the case and the arrest of the three accused barely days after the crime. While two of the accused were arrested on Wednesday, the third was picked during a midnight raid in Bulandshahr in UP.
“Earlier, I was apprehensive that the investigation might be slow. But after the arrest of all the accused, we are convinced that the probe is proceeding smoothly. The SIT has done its job. I will also look into the initial lapses that delayed the investigation into the case,” Sharma said.
After meeting the rape victim, Sharma said that her daughter did not die from injuries she sustained after a fall at their rented room in Manesar. She said the infant was choked to death by the accused. “The government has agreed to pay a monetary compensation to the victim. However, the quantum has not been decided as yet, but there have been discussions with the state government,” said Sharma.
Replying to a question, the NCW member said that the initial lapses in the investigations and allegations that there was deliberate delay on the part of the police to register a case, would also be investigated. “The NCW will send its recommendations to the state government in this regard,” Sharma said.
To ensure that victims of molestation, rape and similar crimes get sympathetic and humane hearing at police stations, the NCW will also organise sensitisation programmes at the police training centre in Madhuban. “We have already sensitised 800 police recruits in Madhuban and the process will continue,” Sharma said.
