No retirement blues in virtual world

- Dr Narinder Arora letterschd@hindustantimes.com

Almost one and a half years ago, I joined the battalion of retired people. But after dedicating six months to personal preoccupations, I got back to professional work, which takes away my six to eight hours, with occasional ‘emergency’ engagements. So I have lots of time on my platter.

I find my doctor friends in government service busy while private professionals are wellsettled in their day-to-day practice.

The new working place has its own alignments of doctors and squeezing yourself in that crowded place becomes a difficult preposition. How to spend time meaningfully? Reading about your own profession is a very good option, which is exercised frequently to know the latest updates and advances in your specialty.

The other day, a recently retired friend of mine narrated the following conversation with his wife. His wife asked, “What are you doing?”

“Nothing,” he politely answered.

“But you were doing the same thing yesterday,” she confronted. “Yes,but I am not finished yet,” he replied.

This was not taken very kindly and she retorted, “Obviously, living with you for the last 30 years, I know you are good for nothing and good at nothing. It’s the government service which tolerated you for all the donkey years, where nothing is good and good is nothing. But now you have a chance to redeem yourself. At least, you can go and capture some Pokemons as you have failed to capture anyone’s imagination.”

Such conversations come your way in case you have nothing else to do to take a break from home.

The saying “A retired husband is in full-time service of his wife,” is no longer true as modern times are the best times to retire.

The vacuum inflicted by retirement can be filled by cultivating a hobby. I invested my time in learning golf. With hard work and passion for the game, I now manage to go to the main golf course and really look forward to play. The passion for the game has “engolfed” me.

The daily set of four newspapers and online news also keep me engaged.

But the best is being part of WhatsApp. With the number of real friends shrinking, spreading wings in the virtual world of friends becomes very natural. There are many WhatsApp groups but you tend to be part of those comprising your former classmates or batchmates. One wants to be connected to friends who were at one time sailing in the same boat, but headed for different destinations.

As the saying goes: “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” It helps if what you love is being unemployed or retired.
