‘Police giving opportunity to gangsters to join mainstream’

Additional director general of police (ADGP-law and order) Rohit Choudhary on Saturday said the police are providing an opportunity to gangsters, who were misled into the world of crime, to abandon criminal activities and join the mainstream.
Choudhary held a meeting with around 40 families of gangsters at the police lines here and heard their problems.He was accompanied by inspector general (IG-Patiala) AS Rai, deputy inspector general (DIG) Sukhchain Singh Gill and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu. “Some youngsters get misled due to glorification of the gun culture and take part in criminal activities. They realise the consequences of their acts later. Sometimes cops also exploit them,” said the additional director general of police.
Now we have decided to give them an opportunity to join the mainstream,” said Choudhary.
“We have opened doors for those with criminal background who now want to live normal life. Their grievances will be resolved on priority,” he added.
Family members of many criminals, including women, narrated their woes before police officials.
“My brother was booked in a couple of cases of dispute around 10 years ago, but now he is living normal life as a daily wager. Police often call him for inquiry, whenever a crime is reported in the area. We just want a peaceful life,” said Karamjit Kaur, sister of Sony, a resident of Sangrur.
“I came here with the family members of Pavittar Singh, who is serving as a panch for the past four years in our village. He was booked in a murder case. I hope such meetings will help those who have left the world of crime and living a normal life,” said Karamjit Singh, sarpanch of Kular Khurd village.
