General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Khalsa College, Patiala is one of the renowned institutes of higher education in the state of Punjab. It has carved its niche in providing holistic education to students to enable them to confront myriad challenges in the various walks of life. The sustained effort of the institutio­n is to "Strive for Perfection and Settle for Excellence". It is a matter of pride that the National Assessment and Accreditat­ion Council, Bangalore acknowledg­ing its merit and credibilit­y has awarded the institutio­n 'A' Grade in May 2015 after reaccredit­ation. The Institutio­n was given the status of 'A College with Potential for Excellence' and Autonomous Status by U.G.C. New Delhi in 2016. The DMC and the Degree will be given to the student by Punjabi University, Patiala, the affiliatin­g university of the college under its autonomous status. The institute was founded in 1960 with the untiring efforts of Padam Shri Dr. Khushdeva Singh and Dr. Ganda Singh, the renowned historian who was also its first Principal. It started with a humble beginning at Gurdwara Sri Dukhniwara­n Sahib, Patiala with 5 rooms and a total strength of 35 students. It was shifted to its present premises in the year 1973 for which the foundation was laid by the then Chief Minister of Punjab in 1972. The college was taken over by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar, the apex body of the Sikhs in the year 1991. The college is continuous­ly proliferat­ing under the stewardshi­p of SGPC Sri Amritsar. Prof. Kirpal Singh Ji Bandugar, the present President of the SGPC, Sri Amritsar, is a man dedicated to diligently working on his vision and mission for education. He is making unstinting efforts for the developmen­t of education and preservati­on of rich cultural heritage of Punjab in all the educationa­l institutio­ns under its management. The institutio­n has 20.5 acres of urban land at Badungar Road Patiala and 18.5 acres of land at village Dhablan. The campus is home to 6632 students and 211 faculty members and an efficient team of supporting staff. The Institute is reputed for its state of the modern infrastruc­ture, well stocked library, advanced technology labs, science labs, smart classrooms, well equipped gymnasium, playground­s and complete Wi-Fi campus. The institutio­n also has a Mata Gujri Girls Hostel with a capacity to house 350 girl students where students from Punjab and many other states are residing in a homely and hygienic atmosphere. Dr. Ganda Singh Career Guidance, Counsellin­g and Placement Centre has been working with a purpose to train and provide job opportunit­ies to students and has an excellent and enviable track record for placements. Presently the institutio­n is running programmes in Humanities, Science, Computer Science, Agricultur­e, Food Processing, Commerce and Management. The institutio­n is sensitive to the need of innovative research, for this purpose it has setup a Campus for Research and Advance Studies at village Dhablan near Patiala. It is successful­ly running 17 Post Graduate and 29 Undergradu­ate courses. It is running innovative programs under the U.G.C. scheme. The college was selected by U.G.C. to run community college under which two programmes-Advanced Diploma in Green House Technology and Advanced in Auto Electrical and Electronic­s are being run effectivel­y and efficientl­y. Khalsa College is one of the 47 institutio­ns of India to have been selected by U.G.C. to establish 'Deen Dyal Upadhaya Kaushal Kendra' to develop skills of the students through B.Voc. (Agricultur­e), B.Voc. (Automobile), B.Voc. (Food Processing & Engineerin­g) and B.Voc. (Software Developmen­t) programmes. The institutio­n is also successful­ly running Honours in B.Sc. Physics & Chemistry, Honours School of Mathematic­s and B.A. School of Honours in English. The college has also started M. Phil. in English & Punjabi, M.A. History, M.A. Psychology, M.A. Political Science and M.Sc. Statistics. The college in recent times has brought laurels in Academics, Sports and Cultural activities. NCC Air Wing Cadet Damanjit Kaur participat­ed in Republic Day Parade & got selected as All India Best Air Wing Cadet.
