SHIMLA:National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed that all the buildings, particularly commercial ones, having discharge of more than 5 kilolitre per day (KLD), should build their own sewage treatment plant (STP) within a period of three months, starting from Tuesday.

The green court’s circuit bench in Shimla led by chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, judicial member Justice Dalip Singh and expert member Nagin Nanda directed the stakeholders concerned to provide complete data of physical inspection as to how many drains carry sewage within the Shimla municipal corporation area.

“They should also state the status of the existing STPs and the requirements for their up gradation,” the order read.

“In fact there already exists a policy in the state, approved by the board, which states that a hotel having more than 25 rooms should have its own sewage treatment plant,” the authorities informed NGT. The government and pollution control board have also been asked to issue notices to all such builders within two week, requiring them to comply with the directions without default.
