A 35-year-old RTI activist from Kabulpur village in Rohtak was brutally beaten up after his expose through several RTI applications led to an FIR against former sarpanch of his village.

Victim Jaipal Dagar has been admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) with both his legs fractured and other injuries after being allegedly hit by iron rods.

The police said Dagar’s RTI applications on developmental works in the village during the regime of former sarpanch Sandeep exposed several irregularities in the expenditure of funds.

His detailed complaint to the deputy commissioner led to an inquiry against Sandeep, who was eventually booked under several sections of the IPC in May 2017.

In the police complaint, Dagar stated that junior engineer (JE) Mohan called him to meet him in the village on the pretext of checking some samples of sub-standard material.

However, when Dagar went to meet the junior engineer , some local goons accompanied by Sandeep abducted him and took him to a house where he was brutally thrashed him with iron rods.

Dagar said that he was then taken to an agricultural field where he was further beaten up by the accused. He said the accused even pressured him to claim that he was injured in a road accident.

Based on his complaint, the police booked five accused, including Mohan and Sandeep, and some unnamed others under Sections 120B, 148, 149, 323, 341, 342, 365, 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Shivaji colony SHO Naveen Kumar said an investigation is on and no arrest has been made so far.

The Haryana Soochna Adhikar Manch has condemned the beating up of the RTI activist. “The RTI application of the victim established irregularities and corruption.

The accused, who have beaten up the innocent man for bringing out truth, should be dealt strictly,” said Subhash, the convener of the manch.
