Residents protest outside DC office after 3-hour rain halts life in Mansa
MANSA : A day after three-hour rain recorded at 20mm flooded the city leading to water-logging in urban areas and injuries to more than 20 people in incidents of roof collapse, residents protested outside the deputy commissioner’s office on Saturday.
The protesters included slum dwellers as well.
Another tragedy was added to the rain woes with 6-year-old Sukhpreet Singh, son of a farm labourer, dieing after falling in a tubewell in his submerged field.
Protesters claimed that despite deputy commissioner Dharam Pal Gupta’s assurance of free treatment, the civil hospital had failed to provide basic amenities.
“Our staff members are out in the field to carry out assessment of the waterlogged fields and as of now nothing can be said about the damage to the cotton crop,” said Gurdita Singh, district agriculture officer.
He added a canal breach has been reported near the Rama Nandi village.
RELIEF CAMP SET UP AT GRAIN MARKET
The district administration has set up a relief camp for people whose houses are under water after BIS Chahal, adviser to CM Captain Amarinder Singh, held a meeting with the deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police here on Saturday. However the camp bore an empty look till late evening as nobody has shifted there.
“We have arranged for proper stay and food for the people in the camp," said Mansa SDM Latif Ahmad.
