SOMESH GOYAL IS HIMACHAL POLICE CHIEF

: Somesh Goyal, a 1984-batch IPS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the state’s director general of police (DGP). He replaces Sanjay Kumar who has been appointed as director general of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The senior-most police officer in the state, Goyal was presently posted as DGP (Prisons). Goyal said that improving the delivery system and projecting a people-friendly image of police would be his main concerns.

SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh government appointed Somesh Goyal, a 1984-batch IPS officer, as the new director general of police (DGP), after Sanjay Kumar was relieved to take charge as Director General of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) .

The senior most police officer in Himachal Pradesh, Goyal was earlier posted as the director general of police, prisons and correction­al services. He has initiated welfare schemes for prisoners.

Goyal is a trained commando—he was adjudged the best trainee commando—and has worked with National Security Guard (the Black Cats). He has also trained the Special Protection Group responsibl­e for the security of the Prime Minister. On deputation with Border Security Force, he served in Kashmir and West Bengal as DIG and Inspector General, respective­ly. He was also a member of the Service Selection Board in Kashmir and Naxal-hit areas such as Chhattisga­rh and Bihar.

Goyal is a recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguis­hed Services. Some of the other honors bestowed on him include Kathin Sewa Medal, High Altitude Medal, Internal Security Medal and Police Medal for Meritoriou­s Service.

He has also served with Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporatio­n and General Industries Corporatio­n. Goyal has held many sensitive posts in department­s like CID, Armed Police training and vigilance during his career. He was promoted as additional director general of police in 2009 and posted as ADG, Headquarte­rs and Armed Police and Training and State Vigilance Bureau. A postgradua­te from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Goyal used to teach at Vaish College, Rohtak, before he joined the Indian Police Service.

The new DGP accentuate­d upon women safety, tackling traffic problems and growing drug menace . “My focus will be on containing cyber crime, crime against woman and traffic problem,” he said.
