NEWDELHI: A 21-year-old aspiring air hostess is battling for life at a government hospital after she was stabbed multiple times, allegedly by a man living in her neighbourhood in east Delhi’s Ram Nagar near Shahdara on Wednesday evening.

Police said the attacker was known to the woman and they were friends. He fled the crime scene after the incident. They suspect a love angle. The absconding suspect, identified as Adil, is an auto-lifter. He was arrested in vehicle theft cases, police said.

Nupur Prasad, deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara district), said the crime took place around 5.30 pm at Mansarovar area in Ram Nagar. The DCP said it came to their notice through a call made to the police control room (PCR) by a neighbour.

“By the time our team reached the spot, the neighbours had already rushed the injured woman to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital. She is presently in operation theatre (OT) and undergoing surgery,” said Prasad adding a case of attempt to murder has been registered in connection with the crime. The woman’s condition is critical.

The DCP said the woman is undergoing air hostess training at Frankfinn institute. She was out to buy something from a shop in her neighbourhood. She was heading towards the shop when Adil stopped her. Locals said the two were having a discussion that turned into an altercation.

The officer said, Adil took out a knife and attacked the woman.
