NEWDELHI:At 27, Irfan could be Delhi’s Robin Hood. He steals from the rich and funds health camps for the poor back home in Bihar. He reportedly funded the wedding for at least eight families in his village.

But Irfan also saves some of the loot for himself.

The Class 5 school dropout, arrested for his involvement in at least 12 burglary cases in Delhi, he has a penchant for expensive cars and watches. When a Delhi police team arrested him from his home town in Bihar on July 6, he was wearing a Rolex watch — stolen from a bungalow in New Friends Colony.

A few months ago, he had bought a Honda Civic car after selling expensive watches and jewellery to a local shopkeeper. The shopkeeper, Dharmender, has also been arrested.

A Delhi police team that arrested Irfan from Bihar’s Pupri district was shocked when locals said Irfan was a social worker who held health camps for the poor. “Villagers knew him by the name of Ujala Babu,” an investigator told HT.

They refused to believe that the 27-year-old was a burglar, active in south-east Delhi where he broke into homes and stole only expensive or luxury items.

Police said Irfan not only lied about his identity to the villagers but also to his girlfriend, a woman who has reportedly acted in Bhojpuri films.
