Apropos Ramachandra Guha’s piece, ‘Remembering a simpleminded Sardar’ (HT, July 16, 2017,), Khushwant Singh was indeedahuman-being par-excellence, brutally honest and a colossal intellectual. The most endearing qualityinhim washis zest for life and his own brand of delicious humour. He revered Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Taslima Nasrin and was often a host and guest to global who’s-who. KulwantSinghSuri, son of novelist Nanak Singh, once enquired about his health on phone when he was 96.“I am OK, but for some pain in the knees sometimes. If this is so, in this young age, what would happen in old age,” was his prompt reply.
