Medical admission quota row: HC notice to Amritsar private varsity

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday issued notice on Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences (SGRGUHS), Amritsar’s plea, challenging the decision of the Punjab government to reject its representation to make admissions directly.

The SGRGUHS had moved the HC, claiming that they are entitled to make admissions after getting the status of a private university and the state government quota of 50 per cent cannot be applied to its admission process.

However, the HC had asked the Punjab government to decide the representation. During the resumed hearing, the HC was informed that the representation of the university had been turned down. This means that 50 per cent government quota will apply.

The university had claimed that as it has attained the status of a private university thus the state government quota of 50 per cent cannot be applied to its admission process.

The high court was also told that the matter involved the filling of MBBS seats in affiliated constituent colleges by university authorities on its own, in accordance with the provisions of an Act under which the varsity had been set up.

Students enrolled under the government quota pay a fee of ₹2.2 lakh per annum. For others, the fee is around ₹6.6 lakh per annum. The case comes up for hearing on August 1.
