New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has launched a language programme in Korean in collaboration with The Korea Foundation, anon-profit public diplomacy organisation. The Korean language programme will be offered both as an independent one-year certificate course as well as an elective under the choice-based credit system. The certificate programme is open to non-Jam ia students as well and is currently inviting applications.

“The course is a result of the Memorandum of Understanding between the university and The Korea Foundation which will be providing the faculty for the first two years ,” said Muke sh Ran jan, coordinator, Office of International Relations, JMI. The university plans to increase its engagement by adding a comprehensive Korean studies programme in the future, he added. The certificate programme may also be upgraded to diploma subsequently.

“India and South Korea share a robust trade and diplomatic relationship and the increasing popularity of cultural commodities like K-pop make it the right time to offer this programme to our students ,” explained Ran jan.

The course will be delivered by Professor Do-Young Kim who previously taught Korean language at Jawaharlal Nehru University and was instrumental in setting up the language department at the University of Delhi. According to Kim, there is a growing demand for professionals with Korean language skills thanks to the presence of several Korean companies in the Indian market .“Traditionally, language courses have been associated with jobs such as translation and interpretation but corporates now are keen to recruit candiadates who are multilingual and therefore li kley to perform well in a multicultural environment ,” he explains.
