KHATTAR GOVT BANS LIQUID NITROGEN IN DRINKS, FOOD
CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has prohibited the flushing or mixing of liquid nitrogen with any drink or food article in the state.
The decision comes in the wake of recent hospitalisation of a Delhi business man with a perforated stomach after consuming a cocktail containing liquid nitrogen at a Gurugram pub.
Saket Kumar, commissioner (food safety), food and drugs administration department, said the orders to this effect had been issued under Section 34 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (Central Act 34 of 2006).
He said that as per the expert medical opinion, any drink or food article preparation of which involved the flushing or mixing of liquid nitrogen was harmful for humans.
He said that due to its low temperature, liquid nitrogen could be extremely damaging to body tissue causing frostbite and cryogenic burning on contact. Moreover, if ingested, it could lead to severe internal damage, destroying tissue in them out hand intestinal tract, he added. Sake ts aid said evaporated liquid nitrogen releases a large volume of gas and it could burst the stomach if ingested in a large quantity.
