GALLE: Having started their Sri Lanka tour with a bang, there was extra cheer for the India team with first-choice opener KL Rahul getting back to full fitness.

The opening batsman was ruled out of the first Test due to high fever.

He had to be hospitalised and stayed back in Colombo for treatment while the rest of the side moved to Galle. He reached the team hotel in Galle on Thursday afternoon and was at the ground Friday morning, taking part in the team’s warm-up session.

Rahul is India’s first-choice opener and played a starring role in the series win over Australia cricket team. However, his career has been plagued by injuries and he underwent shoulder surgery after the Australia series.

He missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the 2017 Champions Trophy. The warm-up match ahead of the first Test in Sri Lanka was his first competitive game since the last Test against Australia in Dharamsala in March, and he looked in fine touch, scoring a polished 54.

In the first Test Abhinav Mukund and Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings. Dhawan got a 190 while Mukund got out early.

If fit, Rahul should replace Mukund in the second Test in Colombo.
