Govt releases ₹224 cr for pensions

CHANDIGARH: The Captain Amarinder Singh government has released ₹224.7 crore to clear the backlog of pensions due to beneficiar­ies under various social welfare schemes for February and March 2017.

The money, released by the state finance department on the directions of the CM, will be used by the social security depart- ment for disburseme­nt of pension to the elderly, disabled, destitute and widows, an official spokespers­on said.

He said the verificati­on of beneficiar­ies is on to ensure that only genuine and deserving persons get the benefit of pension.

“In line with the promises made in the election manifesto, the pension has been enhanced from ₹500 to ₹750 per month from April,” he added.

The chief secretary has been entrusted with the task of keeping tabs on the entire process to prevent any harassment or suffering to the underprivi­leged people due to amy kind of official apathy in this regard, said the spokespers­on.
