Main accused flees from police custody in Kapurthala

KAPURTHALA: One of the main accused in J al and ha r’ s infamous 2009 rape and murder case, Pankaj Singh Sandhu alias Bheema of Satnam Nagar, fled from police custody on Wednesday. A team from Kapurthala modern jail had taken Sandhu for medical examinatio­n at a civil hospital. Sandhu allegedly pushed the cops during his examinatio­n and fled. Sandhu along with Sandeep Kumar Sandy of Badri Colony, Rohit Kumar alias Babbu of Lasoori Mohalla, were sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonme­nt, under Section 376(D) of the IPC on February 26, 2015.

Two other accused, Rohit’s brother Ramesh Kumar and Jagdeep Kumar Billa of Basti Danish manda were awarded life imprisonme­nt under Section 302 and seven-year imprisonme­nt under Section 201 .

DSP jails Lalit Kohli said, “A team of six cops was accompanyi­ng Sandhu. He pushed the cops suddenly to the other side an dr an from the spot.”

THECASE

On November 11, 2009, a burnt body of a girl was found lying in a vacant plot at Green Park. The deceased’s mother had complained that the victim had gone to meet her friend but did not return home. After failing to find the victim, the family members lodged a complaint with police.

As per deceased’s mother the body was identified from her necklace, a wrist band and her footwear.
