The men refused to give blood and urine samples, but the doctor on duty said their breath smelled of alcohol, and the police booked them for drink-driving. They were taken to the Sector 26 police station, where Varnika and her father VS Kundu, a senior Haryana bureaucrat, lodged a complaint of “harassment, outraging the modesty of a woman and attempt to kidnap”. The police booked the two men only for stalking. The accused were formally arrested at 5 am and bailed out soon afterwards. Amid a public outcry and intense media scrutiny, on August 9, the men were charged with attempt to kidnap and re-arrested.
