53 live bombs found from riverbed in Tarn Taran
TARN TARAN: Panic gripped Dhunda village, near Goindwal Sahib town, 20km from here, after 53 live bombs were found at the Beas river bed, on Wednesday evening.
Locals, Nirvail Singh and Lakha Singh, were first to notice the bombs, while constructing a religious building there, at around 4pm.
They informed the sarpanch and police.
Cops, led by Tarn Taran senior superintendent of police (SSP) Darshan Singh Mann, rushed to the spot.
An anti-bomb squad of Punjab Armed Police (PAP) was also called in from Jalandhar to defuse the old and rusted bombs. The superintendent of police said, initial assessment suggest that the bombs belong to the army.
“This area was used by the army in 1970s to dispose of expired ammunition. These bombs must have been left here at that time,” he said.
Superintendent of police (SP) Tilak Raj and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Satpal Singh were also present.
This is the second time in six months, when villagers have found live bombs in the area.
On March 27, the villagers had found 23 live bombs, which were defused by the police, by making controlled blasts.
