Kashmir alien to triple talaq, SC verdict evokes mixed response

-

SRINAGAR : The Supreme Court declaring instant triple talaq unconstitutional is unlikely to have an impact in Jammu and Kashmir, the country’s only Muslim majority state, as the practice is not in vogue here owing to lack of social sanction.

In Kashmir, there have been no known cases of instant triple talaq or Muslim men divorcing their wives – orally or in writing – three times in one go.

There is, however, anger among the people with their dominant thought being that the Supreme Court verdict is an “intrusion into the religious affairs of Muslims for political gains”.

“Islamic law is equal for everyone. However, for political gains, its image is being maligned. It is being presented in a wrong way,” says Moulana Hami.
