‘GOVERNANCE MUST BE LEFT TO THOSE ELECTED BY VOTERS’
NEW DELHI: The judiciary can set aside a law that is unconstitutional but it must leave governance and law making to those elected by voters, law minister Ravi S hank ar Pr as ad said in New Delhi on Friday.
“Of late, I am seeing a great propensity of certain courts to take over governance. There is a need to reflect upon this trend… Governance is to be given to those elected to govern,” he said.
Pr as ad was speaking at a seminar organised by National Human Rights Commission. Former Chief Justice of In di aH L Dattu, who heads the NH RC, was also present at the event.
Pr as ad said the judiciary must set aside any law that is found unconstitutional and any order that is arbitrary .“Judiciary must hold the executive accountable. It must have the right to set right an errant politician who is abusing his authority. These are the power soft he judiciary ,” he said.
“Governance and accountability go hand in hand. You can’t take governance and not be accountable,” he said, adding that Parliament, legislature, media and bodies such as NHRC bring in accountability for politicians. HTC
