Trump withdraws invitation after NBA star Curry shows reluctance

- Associated Press sportsdesk@hindustantimes.com

SOMERSET: Stephen Curry and US President Donald Trump agree on one thing: The star is not going to the White House anytime soon. Trump tweeted Saturday that Curry is no longer invited to the White House because of what the president called hesitation by the two-time NBA MVP in deciding whether to make the traditional champions’ trip to Washington. Trump’s comment on Curry came one day after the president told NFL owners to fire players who won’t stand for the national anthem.

“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!” Trump wrote.

‘FIRE PLAYERS’

HUNTSVILLE: President Trump has some advice for National Football League owners: Fire players who kneel during the national anthem. He’s also encouraging fans to walk out in protest. And the president is bemoaning what he describes as a decline in violence in the sport. “They’re ruining the game,” he said.

Several athletes, including a handful of NFL players, have refused to stand during “The Star-Spangled Banner” to protest of the treatment of blacks by police.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who started the trend last year when he played for the San Francisco 49ers, hasn’t been signed by an NFL team for this season. Trump says those players are disrespecting the American flag and deserve to lose their jobs.
