LAW ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
This refers to HT news item “Rape attempt on nine-year-old girl in Panipat private school” (September 22). Incidents of molestation, rape, gang-rapes of girls have become so commonplace. When our girls are vulnerable to ghastly crimes, especially in schools, the whole talk of women empowerment sounds like a sham. The government needs to ponder over as to why the rape cases are increasing despite deterrent laws being in place. Such abominable crimes need to be dealt with a heavy hand. Also, we need to have quality investigators to take cases to their logical conclusion. As long as conviction rate is low, rape cases will keep happening.
