Three die rescuing co-worker from septic tank

GURGAON: Tragedy struck an auto parts company in Khandsa village on Saturday morning when three contract workers died of suffocatio­n while rescuing a co-worker who was cleaning a septic tank.

The deceased have been identified as Nanhe, 35, from Lakhimpur, Rinku, 27, from H ar do ia nd Raj Kumar, 25, from Jewar. The trio are contract workers and all of them hail from different districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Survivor Vineesh Kumar, 25, also hails from the same state.

Police said the deceased entered the tank after hearing Kumar’s cries for help. Though they succeeded in rescuing Kumar but died of asphyxiati­on caused by inhaling methane.

Gulshan Kalra, fire station in-charge at Sector 37, said they received a rescue call around 11.05am and rushed three fire tenders and 15 men to Jay Auto Components Ltd. The three men were pulled out after an hour’s struggle and were rushed to Vinayak hospital. Three were declared brought dead and Vineesh Kumar was admitted in a critical condition.

“The three workers were not wearing any mask, gloves, glasses or helmets, all of which are mandatory gear for people

working in such conditions,” Manish Kumar, a fire official in Sector 37, said.

On Saturday, Kumar entered the tank without any safety gear and soon started feeling giddy and shouted for help. Since he had not entered the chamber completely, the other three manager to pull him out.

“However, the others who went deeper into the tank fell

unconsciou­s,” Kumar said.

According to the police, the four workers were employed with the house-keeping section of the company.

Though the police have not received any complaint in this regard, Ashok Bakshi, DCP (south) said, “A case would be registered against the management and the contractor. The matter is being probed.”
