Mumbai local goes off track near CST, no injuries reported
MUMBAI: Two wheels of a local train that had 60 people on board derailed on Sunday afternoon at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), hampering rail services at the station.
No casualties or injuries were reported in the accident largely because the local was operating at a low speed when two wheels of the second-class women compartment went off the track. This is the second case of a Mumbai local train derailing this year.
Railway police and central railway officials immediately got all the commuters to safely de-board the train and ensured that the coaches were re-railed 04.00pm.
Platform number 5 of the CSMT was rendered non-operational due to the derailment and services on it could not resume even after re-railment work was complete. The Central Railway has ordered an enquiry into the derailment.
THEFT, MOLESTATION AFTER STAMPEDE
Police have launched a probe into alleged instances of theft and molestation reported by eyewitnesses after Friday’s stampede on a footover bridge at Elphinstone Road station.
Videos showing ornaments being removed from the bodies of the victims have gone viral on social media. “We are studying the video recordings and investigating the cases of thefts and molestation reported to us,” said Sunil Deshmukh, assistant commissioner of police.
The police on Sunday started recording the statements of residents staying in the building opposite the Elphinston station bridge. “The people who witnessed the incident would be called in for recording their statements to find out the cause of the stampede,” said an officer from the Dadar police station.
