Anand, Swapnil, Gujrathi share third place at Isle of Man chess

ISLE OF MAN: Five-time world champion Viswanatha­n Anand and Swapnil S Dhopade notched up wins while Vidit Gujrathi played out another draw as the trio shared the joint third place after the eighth round of the Isle of Man Internatio­nal chess tournament. Anand continued his unbeaten run at the tournament by beating France’s Fressinet Laurent in 41 moves. He will face China’s Hou Yifan next.

JERSEY CITY: The United States are one match win away from an epic Presidents Cup triumph, with only Internatio­nals Anirban L ah ir ia nd Kim Si-Woo preventing them from an unpreceden­ted Saturday celebratio­n. Lahiri and Kim’s 1-up win over Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell was the only thing stopping the mighty Americans from becoming the first team to clinch the Cup before Sunday’s 12 singles matches even start.

ATWAL, BHULLART 7

TAMSUI (CHINESE TAIPEI): Arjun Atwal and Gaganjeet Bhullar ended their fourth rounds in contrastin­g fashion but both ended Tied-7th at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters. Atwal (71) closed bogey-bogey while Bhullar (70) had birdies on 16th and 17th, as they finished at three-under 285.

BENGAL WARRIORS WIN

CHENNAI: Riding on Maninder Singh’s heroic performanc­e, Bengal Warriors edged past Jaipur Pink Panthers 32-31 in the Inter Zone Challenge Week of Pro Kabaddi. In a nail-biting finish, Maninder (16 points) got a crucial bonus point in the dying moments to win it for Bengal Warriors. Pawan Kumar scored 14 points for Jaipur Pink Panthers.

RUSSIA, CHINA BANNED

PARIS: Russia and China were banned from internatio­nal weightlift­ing, ruling them out of the world championsh­ips, after reanalysed drugs tests from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics returned at least three positive results each.
