Jay Shah files defamation case against news website

AHMEDABAD/NEWDELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah’s son Jay on Monday filed a criminal defamation case in a metropolit­an court in Ahmed a bad against news portal The Wire over a report claiming his firm’s turnover grew exponentia­lly after the party came to power in 2014. Additional chief metropolit­an magistrate SK Gadhvi ordered a court inquiry into the matter under CrPC section 302.

In his petition, Jay Shah prayed for “criminal action against the respondent­s for defaming and tarnishing the reputation of the complainan­t through an article, which is scandalous, frivolous, misleading, derogatory, lib el lou sand consisting of several defamatory statements ”. The case has been filed under IPC sections 500 (defamation), 109 (abetment), 39 (voluntaril­y cause grievous hurt) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy). The Wire, in its reports aida company owned by Jay Shah saw a huge rise in its turnover after BJP came to power in 2014.

Jay Shah rejected the charge, insisting the story was “false, derogatory and defamatory ”. The next hearing for a court inquiry will be on October 11.

Union minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said there is no impropriet­y in additional solicitor general Tush ar Me ht a appearing on behalf of Jay Shah in a defamation case, as he is permitted to do so after taking necessary sanction from the law ministry. The minister said the allegation­s of impropriet­y were unfounded as Mehta had sought permission from the ministry before taking on the case.

Meanwhile, the Congress demanded setting up of an inquiry commission of two sitting judges of the Supreme Court to look into the alleged irregulari­ties in companies owned by Jay Shah. “We are not levelling any allegation­s (of criminalit­y) in this. But it should be made public which commoditie­s were exported/ imported by Jay Shah’ s firm Temple Enterprise­s and to which countries so that they earned ₹51 crore from foreign countries and their turnover swelled by 16,000 times ,” Congress leader An and S harm a said.

The Congress on Monday also held press conference­s in 12 states on the issue while the remaining states will be covered in the next few days.
