Retired prof, son among 3 killed in buscar collision

SANGRUR: A retired professor and his son were killed when their car hit a motorcycli­st coming from the wrong side and rammed into a bus at Bhindran village on the Patiala-Bathinda road on Saturday.

Ajit Singh, 80, who retired as a professor of history at Punjabi University, Patiala, and his son, Ramandeep Singh, 45, an assistant professor at Government Polytechni­c College for Girls, Patiala, died on the spot on National Highway-64. The motorcycli­st, Harwinder Singh, a resident of Bhindran village, also died in the mishap.

Ajit Singh’s wife, Minder Kaur, 80, was injured and referred to the PG I MER, Chandigarh.

“Passengers were getting off at the village bus stop when the motorcycli­st crossed the road from the wrong side. The car hit him and collided with the PRTC (Pepsu Road Transport Corporatio­n) bus ,” said Ranjit Singh, the station house officer of Sadar police station in Sangrur.

Ajit Singh, his wife and son were going from Patiala to Sangrur to collect rent from his farms, family sources said.

“We had to smashthe car windows to rescue them. Ramandeep and his mother were sitting in front, while his father was seated at the back. We brought them to the Sangrur Civil Hospital where doctors declared the father and son dead,” said Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Bhindran village.

Harwinder Singh was an electronic mechanic and was going for his job in Sangrur. He is survived by his wife and a 10-yearold son.
