ASI, family booked for tossing turban of Sikh woman

TARN TARAN: The Tarn Taran police have booked an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police and his family members for allegedly tossing the turban of a 38-year-old baptised Sikh woman here on Friday.

The accused are assistant sub-inspector Kulwinder Punj, 45, his wife Loveleen Punj, 42, sister in-law Rita Punj, 40, daughter Tania Punj, 19, and a nephew, 22, whose identity is yet to be ascertaine­d by the police.

In her complaint, Rajwinder Kaur, of Green Avenue, said that her house is near the accused’s residence.

“The assistant sub-inspector, including his family members, overlaid me in the street, when I was on my way to market for some domestic work,” she said.

“They have hurt my religious sentiments by assaulting me and tossing my turban in public,” she said.

Sub-inspector (SI) Amanjot Kaur said a case has been registered under Sections 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecutio­n of common object) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.

The accused are still absconding.
