MUMBAI: A Chembur resident was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting his 16-year-old neighbour after she requested him to talk softly.

The accused, Imran Shaikh, was granted bail later that day, said police. He was then rearrested and charged under section 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) of the IPC. He will appear before the court Sunday.

The police said the girl lives in an SRA building at Shramjivi Nagar with her father and two older sisters. She asked police to register a complaint against Shaikh after he allegedly pulled her by hair and attacked her with a sharp object.

The girl said she and her friend were heading to their tuition classes at 7pm on Thursday when she noticed an autorickshaw parked near her building.

When she passed by, she heard Shaikh sitting in the driver’s seat and talking loudly to his friends seated behind.

She said the three men were using foul language, which offended her. She approached Shaikh and asked him to talk softly.

The girl said Shaikh got out and approached her. “I saw anger in his eyes but did not think he would hit me,” she said.

When she tried to get away, he took out a knife from his pocket.

She raised an alarm, following which her aunt — who was on the way home — and the watchman of her building ran to her aid. On seeing them, Shaikh fled. “The girl’s nose was fractured and bleeding. The watchman and her aunt took her to Rajawadi Hospital,” said a police officer who did not wish to be identified.

THE ACCUSED, IMRAN SHAIKH, WAS GRANTED BAIL LATER THAT DAY, SAID POLICE. HE WAS THEN REARRESTED AND CHARGED UNDER SECTION 354 OF THE IPC
