BHOPAL: The 19-year-old UPSC aspirant, who was gang-raped by four men on Tuesday, said she heard the men debating whether to kill or kidnap her for ransom.

“I did not tell them about my father, who is a cop, otherwise they would have murdered me ,” the girl told HT on Saturday.

“The men slapped me and asked about my parents. They wanted to find out if I belonged to a well-to-do family and would lodge a complaint. I overheard them debating whether to kill me or kidnap me for ransom. I lied that my mother was a tailor and my father a labourer and that I lived in Vi dish a. When convinced that I belonged to a poor family, they spared my life. One of them even brought a dress for me ,” the woman said.

Consoling her, the victim’s mother, who is with Madhya Pradesh police, said :“My daughter is strong. She won’t cry as it is the lives of the accused that have been spoiled and not my daughter’s.” She added that her daughter secured 87% marks in Class 12 and joined a coaching institute to become an I AS officer. However, she now wanted to become a nIP S officer to “teach a lesson to such miscreants”.

The 19-year-old’s father said, “A policeman told me in August that he saw a girl coming from near the tracks in a bad shape as she had been harassed by some miscreants. He asked her family to register a case but they refused, probably due to stigma. However, now I wish I had registered a case.”

Talking to HT, Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials said the rape could have been averted had railway authorities sanctioned construction of a wall near the Habibganj station to prevent unauthorised entry.

A senior RP F official said ,“We wrote to the railway administration five years ago for construction of a wall. We also urged the local administration to raze the adjacent slums that have come up illegal ly but no action was taken .”

Meanwhile, Bar Association president Ra jeshVy as said lawyers in the state had decided they would not represent the accused.

The Congress on Saturday said the gang rape in the heart of the state capital was a “blot” on the BJP goverment in MP.

Leader of Opposition in the assembly Ajay Singh slammed police for its lackadaisical attitude in registering a complaint of the survivor.
