Farm­ers’ protest today, no­tice is­sued to district au­thor­i­ties

CHANDI­GARH: The Pun­jab and Haryana high court has is­sued a no­tice to Kapurthala and Jalandhar district ad­min­is­tra­tions on a plea seek­ing ban on high­way block­ades.

In a pub­lic in­ter­est lit­i­ga­tion (PIL), Har­man Singh Sidhu, pres­i­dent of NGO Ar­rive Safe So­ci­ety of Chandi­garh, has sought di­rec­tions to au­thor­i­ties in Jalandhar and Kapurthala to pre­vent farmer unions from block­ing the Na­tional High­way-1 on Novem­ber 15 (Wed­nes­day).

The pe­ti­tioner said dur­ing the protest, farm­ers may in­dulge in law­less­ness caus­ing threat to the pub­lic and lead­ing to traf­fic chaos. The pe­ti­tioner said the pro­test­ers may even try to stop the Delhi-Lahore bus.

The court was told that the DCs of both the dis­tricts have is­sued pro­hibitory or­ders un­der Sec­tion 144 of the Code of Crim­i­nal Pro­ce­dure.

The pe­ti­tioner also urged the court to ban in­ter­net ser­vices in Kapurthala and Jalandhar dis­tricts for two days.

The no­tice was also is­sued to Pun­jab chief sec­re­tary, DGP, SSPs of two dis­tricts and farm­ers’ unions. The pe­ti­tion will come up for hear­ing on Novem­ber 15.
