TWO HELD FOR MURDER OF GANGSTER AIDE IN JALANDHAR

JALANDHAR: The city police on Saturday claimed to have cracked the murder case of Ashok Kumar Happy of Balmiki Mohalla in B as ti Danish manda locality with the arrest of two persons.

Happy was attacked by seven to eight people with sharp-edged weapons on late Thursday night at Sabzi Mandi. He died on Friday at a local hospital.

The accused have been identified as Jaspal Singh Shera and Ravi of Nijjra village in the district. Both are in their twenties.

The police said that Roop Kumar of Kot Sadiq locality had come to meet his friend Gelu in Valmiki Mohalla. They claimed his bike had hit a child and Happy had slapped him after a brief argument. Later, Roop Kumar called his friends and planned the attack to take revenge for the slap. They added the other accused are being identified from the interrogat­ion of the both arrested and they would be taken on the remand.

Opposition leaders from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) including union minister Vi jay Sam pl a had condemned the killing and had asked the police to arrest the accused immediatel­y. On Friday, the vendors at the Sabzi Mandi kept their shops closed in support of Happy. Certain posters pasted in the Mandi claim that Happy was murdered because he was stopping drug peddlers from selling drugs.

A case under Sections 302 (murder) and 307( attempt to murder) of the Indian Pen al Code (IPC) was registered against the unidentifi­ed accused by the division number 5 police station.
