Mysterious death: Police stop cremation, send body for autopsy

TARN TARAN: The Patti police on Saturday stopped the cremation of a woman, who died under mysterious circumstan­ce at ward no 6 in Patti, after her father suspected foul play.

Gurpreet Kaur ,27, who was found dead on Saturday morning at her husband’s residence, had allegedly committed suicide, said the police. Her father Harpal Singh ,47, of Patti filed a complaint against her husband Jaspl Singh, 28, with the police in this regard.

“One of the neighbours of Jaspal called me and informed me about the mysterious death and cremation of my daughter, and I immediatel­y informed the police,” Harpal said.

Upon receiving informatio­n, the police reached Patti cremation ground, on Saturday afternoon and sent the body for post-mortem.

“We are registerin­g a case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code against Jaspal Singh and more sections will be added after the autopsy report comes,” said station house officer (SHO) of Patti city police station, Tarsem Masih.

The SHO said, according to the deceased’s husband, her body was found hanging with a ceiling fan when he came back from his gym on Saturday morning. “We are probing the case thoroughly,” he said.

The girl’s father said, that her daughter married Jaspal in 2013. He said, “Two months back, Gurpreet came to me and complained that she was not happy with her husband and he will kill her.”

He said, “Jaspal killed my daughter and tried to cremate her body without informing me and the police.”
