Body of Batala jawan killed in J&K to reach his native village today

RAICHACK(BATALA): A pall of gloom descended on Rai Chack village in Batala as the news regarding the death of havildar Palwinder Singh, 37, of 10 Sikh Regiment arrived here late on Monday night. Palwinder Singh was killed when militants attacked an army convoy on the national highway inQazi gun don Monday afternoon. Three militants, allegedly responsibl­e for carrying out an attack on Amarnath pilgrims in July this year, were also killed during this encounter while one militant was arrested.

Palwinder’s wife, Palwinder Kaur, said that last evening around 5 pm, she got a call from Palwinder, who told her that some militants attacked their patrolling team following which an encounter was going on.

“As I asked him about the situation, the phone got disconnect­ed. During that call, I could clearly listen to the sound of firing. Later, I made numerous attempts to call Palwinder, but all her phone calls remained unanswered”.

Later in the evening around 9 pm, they got a call from their relative, who was also serving in same regiment , that Palwinder had died in that attack, she added.Palwinder was recruited in the army in 2000 with 10 Sikh Regiment.

He is survived by wife, daughter Simarjeet Kaur, 8, and 4son, Sehajdeep Singh, 5. His body will be brought to his village from the Rajasansi airport on Wednesday morning.
