Rape in Hisar auto: Accused remanded in judicial custody

Arrested man from Jhiri village confesses to crime; police say have leads on other two

HISAR: Police have arrested one of the three men accused of rapinga27-year-old woman on Monday late night in a moving autoricksh­aw.

Later, she was dumped near Hisar’s military cantonment at Satrod village. The arrested man, Nikhil Kumar, of Jhiri village, was produced before a court that remanded him in judicial custody.

Police spokespers­on Chander Bhan said, “A team from the women police station arrested the accused from an abandoned building in his village.

He has confessed to be driving the auto after being given the keys, when his other friends raped the woman. We also have leads about the other two accused.”

The complainan­t, a mother of three, works in a beauty parlour.

Her complaint added that she had come to Hisar from Barwala and had boarded an auto with eight to 10 passengers in it. The passengers alighted from the auto near the Vidyut-Nagar area; later, the driver and two of his friends raped her, she alleged. Police had registered a case under Sections 376-D (gangrape) and 506 (criminal intimidati­on).

According to informatio­n provided by a source at the police department, there are about 8,800 auto-rickshaws in Hisar.

Almost a third of these autos, 2,700, have not provided any documentat­ion about their ownership or the driver to the authoritie­s. This year, starting January, 7,000 challans have been issued against autos.

Sources said, “At night, around 200 autos ply on the road. Most crimes by auto drivers are committed at night and police have to take steps.”

Prahlad Singh, traffic in-charge, Hisar told mediaperso­ns, “Police keep a strict eye on auto drivers and special campaigns have also been launched. We will continue the vigil at night as well.”
