GURGAON: A 34-year old special police officer (SPO) was killed in the wee hours of Monday while trying to stop a SUV, a Mahindra Xylo, whose occupants were trying to flee the police cordon near Dundahera on Delhi-Gurgaon border.

The victim was identified as Mukesh Kumar and he was hit in the chest by the SUV causing fatal injuries. The SUV also rammed a PCR vehicle that had been placed to block the Mahindra Xylo, police said. The accused managed to flee the spot.

A case of murder against unidentified accused has been registered under sections 153, 186, 307 and 302 of the IPC at Palam Vihar police station. The vehicle bears a Punjab registration number and police suspects it has owned by a Sangrur resident.

Police said the incident happened around 1.45am on Monday. The Mahindra Xylo was spotted speeding from Atul Kataria Chowk towards Kapashera Chowk on Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road. When the occupants of the vehicle spotted the police, they suddenly accelerated and took a U-turn which prompted the police to chase the Xylo, which did not stop despite repeatedly being asked to do so.

During the chase, the occupants of the XYlo took a sudden U-turn at Atul Kataria Chowk and managed to give the police team the slip. “A message was sent to the control room and the police control room in Sector 21 was asked to stop the vehicle as its movement was suspicious.

Near the Yadav hospital in Dundahera, the police team asked them to stop but the accused hit the PCR van and also SPO Mukesh Kumar. He was taken to Columbia Asia hospital, where he succumbed to injuries,” said inspector Vikram Nehra, SHO, Palam Vihar.

Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar also visited the mortuary in the morning, and met with the family members of the deceased and assured them of all support from the police.

Sumit Kuhar, DCP, crime, said a team of the crime branch has been sent to Punjab to nab the accused who were responsible for the death of the SPO.

“A case of murder has been registered against the accused as they intentionally hit the police vehicle and ran over the police officer. They will be nabbed soon,” he said.

In September 2017, a team of Gurgaon police was attacked by three drunk men, when they were asked to stop for checking at Bajghera crossing near Palam Vihar. Police said the accused started arguing with the police and later tore the dress of a police constable on duty and entered into fisticuffs.

In October, on MG Road, four men in a black Scorpio tried to mow down the SHO of Sector 29. He narrowly escaped being run over by the vehicle.
