CHANDIGARH: A Punjab and Haryan a high court bench on Monday dismissed the bail plea of former senior superintendent of police (SSP) Surjit Singh Grewal in a disproportionate assets case. Grew al was SS Pin Mo ga and Fa zilka. Here tired in 2014.

The state’s vigilance bureau (VB) had booked Grewal for amassing properties, more than his known source of income, on December 21, 2017. Grewal had argued that he has been falsely implicated and he rose through the ranks from a constable since 1972. He alleged that the FIR was the result of victimisation as he had interrogated Bharat Inder Singh Chahal, whow as holding a minister’s rank and was adviser to CM Captain Am arin der Singh during his previous regime between 2002 and 2007. He said that now when the Congress has returned to power, a false case has been foisted on him.

Additional advocate general Garuav Garg Dhuriwala said the probe found that the petitioner amassed ₹10 crore between 1999 and 2014 in excess of his known/ declared sources of income. Grewal would be in a position to hamper the course of a free and fair probe if he is granted protection against arrest, he said.

The court observed that the charges against Grewal are serious in nature. “The matter requires a thorough probe. The vigilance report is also indicative that the petitioner has not come clean on truth as regards the assets held by him as also his immediate family members. The plea of political vendetta raised by the counsel representing the petitioner does not inspire any confidence,” the court said while dismissing his bail plea.
