Six years on, NRI booked for deserting wife 15 days after marriage in Jalandhar

JALANDHAR:The Adampur police on Monday booked a 50-year-old non-resident Indian( N RI ), A marjeet Singh,ofP ar as ramp ur village, for allegedly deserting his 18-year-old wife, Rubi, now 24, of Alabhalpur village 15 days after the marriage on February 2,2012.

The case has been registered under Section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC on the complaint of Ruby.

The accused is settled in Greece and has allegedly not contacted his wife after the marriage. Rubyhas,however, beenwaitin­g for her visa for the past six years, that her husband promised her to send it after reaching Greece.

“After a quick engagement, followed by wedding, and a honeymoon, my husband returned to Greece after 15 days of marriage. He promised me to send visa documents soon. But he has not contacted me so far ,” Rubi claimed.

She said that his parents were present at the engagement function, but they did not attend the marriage ceremony citing some family dispute and his husband convinced her family not worry and promised to settle the dispute and continue the marriage.

He called me twice from Greece but now his mobile phone is switched off ,” she told the police in her complaint. The complainan­t said that besides spending ₹ 6 lakh on the wedding function, her parents also gave ₹3.5 lakh to her husband to arrange a visa for her.

Accusing the police of dilly- dallying in registerin­g a case against the NRI and his family, the complainan­t said that she had filed several complaints before the women cell of the police in the past years, but they did not registerth­e case.Rubi allegedtha­tshe had moved the district court for a divorce and the return of dowry and other expenses from her husband. After an inquiry into the matter, DSP (hqs) Balwinder Iqbal Sing hr eco mm ended to register a case against the NRI.
