CAMBRIDGE: Actor Kamal Haasan said that a tie-up with Tamil movie star Rajinikanth seems unlikely as of now as the latter has a “hue of saffron” in his politics, suggesting that the veteran actor is inclined towards the BJP.

“There is a hue of saffron in Rajini’s politics. If that doesn’t change, then I don’t see an alliance with him,” Haasan said at the launch of his website, naalainamadhe.maiam.com, at Harvard University on Saturday.

Haasan, who recently forayed into politics and is set to launch his party on February 21, said he and Rajinikanth are good friends, but “politics is different”.

Rajinikanth announced his entry in Tamil Nadu politics in December. The state is due to go to polls in 2021.

CAMBRIDGE (MASSACHUSETTS): Ace actor Kamal Haasan said a tie-up with Tamil movie star Rajinikanth seemed unlikely at present as the latter had a “hue of saffron” in his politics, alluding that the veteran actor was inclined towards the BJP.

“There is a hue of saffron in Rajini’s politics. If that doesn’t change, then I don’t see an alliance with him,” Haasan said during the launch of his website naalainamadhe.maiam.com at Harvard University.

“My politics will definitely not be saffron,” said Haasan, who recently announced his foray into electoral politics. He mentioned that both the actors were good friends but “politics is different”.

Just before pointing out the stark differences between their politics, Haasan said if there was some commonality of thoughts and ideas between them and in the manifestos of the two political parties, an alliance may be on the cards.

“I cannot see a clear understanding now,” Haasan went on to add when pressed by moderator and senior journalist Barkha Dutt on the sharp ideological differences he has with his contemporary. “If necessary (I will hold hands with others),” Haasan said.

He, however, ruled out a postpoll alliance. “If there is no majority, it’s the people’s verdict. Then I would not have to sit but stand and wait for the next time,” he said, indicating that he would prefer to be in the Opposition if his party did not get a majority.
