AMBALA MC ABOLISHED; SADAR, CITY TO HAVE SEPARATE COUNCILS

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has decided to abolish the Ambala municipal corporation (MC) and have two separate municipal councils for Ambala City and Ambala Sadar.

The separate municipal bodies for city and Sadar will prove to be more beneficial for the residents of both areas in terms of time, distance and cost reduction while availing various municipal services.

Moreover, the military station and cantonment areas of the Ambala Cantonment Board affect the geographical continuity of Ambala City with Sadar, as the cantonment falls between these two areas.

UNDER DIFFERENT ASSEMBLY SEGMENTS

Apart from this, these two fall under different assembly constituencies.

Ambala Sadar is at a distance of around 10 to 12km from the main MC office in Ambala City, which further houses the offices of municipal commissioner and other branch heads.

The decision has also been taken after considering that most of the 15 villages under the Ambala Sadar area are situated away from the main civic body office.

As per 2001 census, the population of the Ambala City area was around 1.39 lakh, which grew up to 1.95 lakh in 2011 whereas population of Ambala Sadar area for these two years was 1.06 lakh and 1.7 lakh. The government also did not find the continuation of Ambala MC financially viable.
