JALANDHAR : As the contractual government employees have failed to hold a meeting with chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh despite repeated requests over the past nine months, they launched a ‘Mukh Mantri Milao, Inaam Pao’ protest under the banner of the Contractual Workers Action Committee, Punjab, on Saturday and held a protest march in the city.

As many as 200 contractual employees carried out the march from the Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall and passed through Jyoti Chowk, Company Bagh, Shashti Market and adjoining areas. Protestors also distributed pamphlets among the people. The protesters also handed over a memorandum of tjheri demands to tehsildar Gurpreet Singh.

The committee has announced to give three ‘prizes’ to those, who succeed in arranging their meeting with the chief minister.

Committee secretary Ashish Julaha said that they have three different prizes for those who help them in meeting state chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Sunil Jhakhar, and Congress party president Rahul Gandhi.

“If anyone succeeds in arranging our meeting with the CM, our 21 employees will do labour work at his place for 21 days. In case of Sunil Jhakar, 11 employees will do labour work at his home for 11 days. If someone fixes our meeting with Rahul Gandhi, 51 employees will jointly give their one-day salary to that person,” said Ashish Julaha.

The contractual employees will carry out such rallies in Bhatinda, Gurdaspur and Mohali.

Ashish said that in case their protest did not yield the expected results or that the government fails to address their concerns, they will start a hunger strike in Sector 17, Chandigarh, five days ahead of the budget session of the Punjab assembly scheduled for the next month.

The contractual workers have been demanding regularisation for the past one year. The Congress had promised to regularise them and reinstate the suvidha centre employees during the assembly elections.

The protesters were also carrying the manifesto of the Congress in which they had made the promise.

FREE LABOUR POSTERS DISTRBUTED

GURDASPUR : Members of the Theka Mulazam Action Committee also took out a protest march here carrying banners displaying the slogan 'Captain Milao, Inaam Pao' during the march. Committee president Irfan Bhatti said during elections Captain Amarinder Singh had promised them to regularise their services, but 11 months have passed and nothing has been done so far.

The protesters also distributed pamphlets offering free labour by some of the members of the union for a few days, to those who will arrange their meeting with the CM.
