GANG OF THIEVES BUSTED , 5 HELD WITH 16 STOLEN MOBILES

AMRITSAR : The crime investigat­ion agency (CIA) of Amritsar police claimed to have busted a gang of mobile thieves with the arrest of five of its member from Galiara Park near Golden Temple and recovering 16 stolen mobiles from their possession on Thursday.

The accused were identified as Gurjit Singh alias Sonu Bajaji; Harpreet Singh alias Happy of Sultanwind road, Amritsar; Vijay Kumar alias Brar of Fazzupura village in Gurdaspur; Manpreet Kaur alias Kiran of Jethuwal village in Amritsar and Vipal Chaudhary of Bihar. All are in their 20s, said the police.

Additional deputy commission­er of police (ADCP), crime, Harjit Singh Dhaliwal said a team of the CIA led by inspector Joga Singh was patrolling in the area of Galiara Park near the Golden Temple when it received a tip-off about the accused.

He said the informer told the team that the accused targeted pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple and other religious shrines.

After getting the informatio­n, the inspector made raids and arrested the accused. “We have recovered 16 mobiles of different brands,” he said.

He said some of the accused were wanted in many cases of theft in Amritsar. “The accused will be presented in a local court for taking remand for further investigat­ion,” he said. “A case under Section 379 (punishment for theft) and 411 (dishonestl­y receiving stolen property) of the IPC has been registered at E-division police station,” said the ADCP.
